Armchair Fiction presents the original Nancy Drew mystery stories. In this, Carolyn Keene’s “The Secret of the Old Clock,” Teenage sleuth Nancy Drew finds herself drawn into a puzzling mystery as she helps struggling relatives secure their rightful inheritance from the greedy Topham family. The evidence indicates there is a lost will hidden inside an antique clock. Nancy and her friend Helen Corning investigate the contemptible Tophams and confront burglars, all the while trying to find the missing will. Plenty of excitement and danger follow in this wonderful debut Nancy Drew story. Armchair fiction is proud to offer the first four volumes of the Nancy Drew series: “The Secret of the Old Clock,” “The Hidden Staircase,” “The Bungalow Mystery,” and “The Mystery at Lilac Inn,” all written in 1930. All four volumes feature the 1930 Russell Tandy covers and interior illustrations, as well as the Bill Gillies re-release covers from 1950. These beloved original stories were abandoned by Grosset and Dunlap starting in 1959 when it was decided to rewrite and update all of their early Nancy Drew tales. However, many Nancy Drew aficionados feel that these updated editions lack the charm and excitement of the originals. These re-written editions were much shorter and gone was much of the cultural flavor of that era. The original author, Mildred Wirt Benson (aka Carolyn Keene), filled these initial Nancy Drew tales with a delightful sense of mystery and impending danger. So join Nancy and her pals in their original adventures as they pursue a plethora of unsavory characters and solve puzzling mysteries, all the while trying to keep out of danger’s way.
