(1930, Paramount) Gary Cooper, Fay Wray, Emma Dunn, Oscar Apfel, James Marcus. Coop plays a bad guy called “The Llano Kid,” wanted for various frontier crimes. He drifts into a saloon and gets involved in a poker game that ends up with him drilling a card shark who tries to cheat him. After taking it on the lam, he and a conman team up and head south of the border where they try to pass Coop off as the long lost son of an aging Mexican señora, who has promised a handsome reward for his return. Things get tricky when Coop falls for the señora’s beautiful young companion played by a stunning 21-year-old Fay Wray. Further complicating matters is Coop’s realization that the card shark he gunned down was actually the woman’s long lost son. Marcus is good as a sheriff-turned-bounty hunter and Apfel shines as Coop’s conman pal. Long thought to be a lost film. From a beautiful 35mm print.
