(1955, Anamorphic Widescreen) Cornel Wilde, Richard Conte, Brian Donlevy, Jean Wallace, Lee Van Cleef, Earl Holiman. This is a terrific, smoke-filled, hard-boiled film noir thriller. Wilde is a crusading detective out to bring down a ruthless mob boss, wonderfully portrayed by Conte. The key to Wilde’s success are two sultry dames who want to help out but are just too afraid of having Conte put the finger on them. There are a number of grim (but cool) moments in this film. Watch for the eye-popping hearing-aid torture scene. Donlevy is great as Conte’s brooding right hand man who used to be top dog. But it’s Holiman and Van Cleef who nearly steal the show as Conte’s seedy torpedo men. Way cool! From 35mm.
