(1931) Disc 1: Little Caesar. Edward G. Robinson, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Glenda Farrell, William Collier, Jr., Sidney Blackmer, Ralph Ince, George E. Stone. In this classic pre-Code gangster epic, Edward G. gives the quintessential “tough-guy” performance as he plays the small-time hood, “Rico,” who moves to the big city (Chicago), driven by his all-consuming desire to "be somebody." With merciless efficiency and an utter lack of moral compass, Rico ruthlessly climbs up the ranks of organized crime, eventually uprooting his bosses to become one of the city’s most powerful kingpins. However, his empire begins to break apart when he tries to force an old friend (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.) back into a life of crime. As the law closes in and his own arrogance alienates his gangster pals, Rico’s dazzling rise to power ends in a tragic scene, with his bullet-riddled body gasping out the immortal line, "Mother of Mercy, is this the end of Rico?" They didn’t make early gangster pictures better than this. Wow. From 35mm.
Disc 2: Dance, Fools, Dance. Joan Crawford, Cliff Edwards, Billy Bakewell, Clark Gable. Ruined by the ‘29 crash, Crawford turns reporter while her brother (Bakewell) joins a bootlegging mob. Gable is his cold-blooded boss. A great early crime film! Crawford & Gable’s first film together. 35mm.
