(1930, MGM, Fox) Disc One: The Unholy Three. Lon Chaney, Lila Lee, Elliot Nugent, Harry Earles, John Miljan. Chaney stars in his only sound film, reprising his earlier silent role as a ventriloquist who leads a bizarre criminal trio consisting of himself, a strongman, and a midget. Disguised as a sweet elderly grandmother who runs a bird shop, Lon uses his vocal talents and the group's unique skills to orchestrate a series of daring robberies against upper crust clients. Things get dicey when a robbery turns into murder, leading to a doozy of a courtroom climax. From 35mm.
Disc Two: Born Reckless. Edmund Lowe, Catherine Dale Owen, William Harrigan, Lee Tracy, Marguerite Churchill, Warren Hymer. A charismatic gangster (Lowe) is given a choice by a judge: go to the slammer or enlist to fight in WW1. Lowe chooses the army, where he distinguishes himself as a battlefield hero. However, upon his return to New York, he finds it impossible to escape his criminal past. While attempting to go straight and run a legitimate restaurant, he’s dragged back into the underworld in order to protect his sister and settle a deadly score with a former rival. A solid early crime film. Directed in part by John Ford. From 35mm.
