Set within the ambience of a seaside penny arcade, Sinner’s Holiday concerns an older mother’s (La Verne) struggle to manage her family, especially her wild son, (Cagney in his film debut), who becomes embroiled with a ruthless bootlegger (Withers) and murders a rival during a liquor deal gone wrong. Desperate to save her son from the chair, La Verne attempts to cover up the crime. Her gorgeous daughter (Blondell, also in her film debut) tries to maintain her own romance amidst the burgeoning scandal. From 35mm.
Disc 2: Doorway to Hell. Lew Ayres, James Cagney, Dorothy Meadows, Leon Janney, Robert Elliot, Noel Madison. A ruthless young gangster (Ayres) successfully organizes the warring underworld factions of Chicago into a single efficient crime syndicate. Tiring of the criminal world and seeking a legitimate life, he marries and "retires" to Florida, only to find that his former pals in crime—led by the ambitious James Cagney (in his second film role) have descended into bloody chaos in his absence.
