(1930, RKO) Betty Compson, Lowell Sherman, Raymond Hatton, Hugh Trevor, Ivan Lebedeff, June Clyde. If this movie hadn’t been made by a major studio it would surely have been included in the Forgotten Horrors book. A group of people gathers in a mysterious island mansion (more like a castle really) on a stormy night somewhere in the Caribbean. A shot rings out! A body is tossed over the castle wall, into the sea. But is it really a murder or something far more deceptive? This early talkie-mystery is a bit melodramatic in places, but overall it’s good fun with some nice plot twists along the way. Hatton really shows what he could do without being dressed up as a cowboy. The lavish gothic sets are magnificent and you’ll be treated to close-ups of some amazing piano playing. A decade later Compson was peering through windows in Invisible Ghost. From 16mm.
