(1930) Disc 1: Morocco. Gary Cooper, Marlene Dietrich, Adolphe Menjou, Ullrich Haupt. Dietrich is the sultry cabaret singer who casts a spell over handsome, devil-may-care Legionnaire Cooper. She soon becomes torn between her love for Cooper and her attraction to Menjou’s rich lifestyle. Marlene’s famous song, “When Love Dies,” which she sings while wearing a tuxedo, top hat, and tails, is an unforgettable moment in screen history. As she sings, Cooper (whose girlfriend is fit to be tied) gazes on like a hound dog in front of a freshly fried rib-eye steak. There’s a plethora of action, adventure, and romance in this early sound classic—you don’t want to miss it. From a nice 35mm print.
Disc 2: The Dawn Patrol. Richard Barthelmess, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Neil Hamilton, Frank McHugh, directed by Howard Hawks. Barthelmess plays a WW1 ace who causes endless headaches for his squadron commander. The tables soon turn, though, when he, himself, succeeds as squadron commander and faces the grim reality of sending young pilots to their deaths. A great cast turns in fine performances. Some of the aerial combat and bombing scenes are amazing for 1930. Very cool. From 35mm.
