(1931, 1930) Disc one: The Battle of Gallipoli (aka Tell England). Tony Bruce, Fay Compton, Carl Harbord, Dennis Hoey This forgotten British War classic starts out like a lark but soon wades into many gripping battle sequences. The early goings are prior to the war and show the friendship between two young Brits. Both soon enlist and end up in Gallipoli, where they witness non-stop endless slaughter. Although it’s a technically primitive early talkie, this is a VERY sobering story and graphically portrays the senseless aspect of war. Wow! From 35mm. Disc two: Journey’s End. Colin Clive, Ian Maclaren, David Manners, Billy Bevan, directed by James Whale. Prior to Frankenstein this is the movie that really helped James Whale make a name for himself. It’s a stark WW1 drama with Clive turning in a magnificent performance as an alcoholic captain who fears that his new officer (his sweetheart's brother) will betray his personal shortcomings and his downfall from grace. A very gripping co-production between Gainsborough Pictures & Tiffany Studios. 6.9 on IMDB. From 16mm.
