Horror CRYING WOMAN, THE

(1960, aka La Llarona) María Elena Marqués, Eduardo Fajardo, Luz María Aguilar, Mauricio Garcés.  A young married couple is warned by the wife’s father that their son will die before his fifth birthday because of an ancient curse.  The father grimly explains to the husband that the ghost of “the crying woman” will forever haunt the descendants of the Spanish conquistador who spurned her in real life—and that his young wife is a direct descendant!  An extensive flashback tells the story of Luisa, a woman who was betrayed by her Spanish conquistador lover, Don Nuño. When he abandons her for the love of another, Luisa goes berserk and murders their children with a dagger, all the while cursing her ex-lover’s descendants before being sentenced to death.  As fate would have it, the couple’s new nanny arrives to look after their son; but we soon learn this mysterious woman is actually possessed by the ghost of Luisa herself! Can the curse be broken in time?  This film has a great climax and a cool transformation scene.  Nice atmospheric sets are complemented by a grandiose music score.  The story of “The Crying Woman” has been filmed numerous times and this version is generally considered the best of the bunch.  From 35mm.
