(1947, aka SPRING) Lyubov Orlova, Nikolay Cherkasov, Nikolai Konovalov, Faina Ranevskaya, Rostislav Plyatt.. This terrific film (7.1 on IMDB) is essentially a comedy about movie-making, with some good music to go along with it. However, it is also a science fiction film about a brilliant, hard-nosed female scientist who has developed an incredible device for catching solar energy. Orlova, plays the female scientist who is approached by movie makers to make a feature film about her work. After turning them down, the filmmakers find a doppelganger to play the role. Little do they know that the scientist and the doppelganger (Orlova playing both) switch identities, which leads to numerous absurd and hilarious situations. The big lab scene towards the end of the film is a knockout, with massive sets and huge pieces of futuristic lab equipment. It’s an unforgettable sequence, easily as good as the lab scenes of the classic Universal monster movies. Charming and funny from start to finish. From 35mm.
