(1940) Carl Wery, Fritz Reiff, Rolf Wernicke. This film has the best pre-1950 rocket ship special effects we have ever seen. Ever. Heck, just the massive hangar that the spaceship is housed in is incredible. Way cool! The plot is simple, Germany launches the first spaceship to orbit the moon. The shots of the spaceship soaring over the Lunar surface are amazing. This short featurette is actually the combination of two abandoned German sci-fi films of the 1930s: Incident in Space and Worldship 18. It’s essentially a mini-version of Destination Moon, which would follow in ten years. Subtitled in English. PLUS: NOW IS TOMORROW (1958) Robert Culp, Charles Bickford, Simon Scott, Sydney Pollack. This unaired sci-fi TV pilot is about a massive technological lookout post that can, if needed, launch a full-scale nuclear strike against our enemies. Culp plays a new recruit burdened with the responsibility of possibly pushing the button that could mean the end of the world. The pressure is enormous and many recruits wash out. Things come to a head when Culp detects an incoming flying object, hurtling through the skies toward the U.S. There is a very cool outer space twist near the end of this film. Very engrossing. From 35mm & 16mm.
