(1937, aka GLUBOKIY REYD) Konstantin Bartashevich, Nikolay Belyaev, Aleksandr Cheban. This cool futuristic sci-fi obscurity starts out with Russia being attacked by a neighboring country (which is never really identified). The invading air forces bomb a Soviet town. In response, the Soviet air force launches a counterstrike against primary enemy targets. With a surge of rousing background music we see the enemy’s zeppelins crashing to the ground in flames. There’s another great sequence where the Soviets attack the enemy’s underground hangars, ultimately resulting in a kamikaze style attack. This remarkable film employs a number of futuristic airships and guns, including a defense system that literally hangs across the sky. There’s a plethora of battle scenes—lots and lots of bombing. The film’s big climax features Soviet bombers pounding a futuristic enemy city, which is soon engulfed in a massive Deluge-type flood after a massive dam is destroyed. All of this, again, to the sound of rousing pro-Soviet music. If you like military science fiction this is definitely a movie you’ll want to check out. From 35mm.
