(1930) Hoot Gibson, Helen Wright, Philo McCullough, Robert Homans, Cap Anderson, Gilbert Holmes, Buddy Hunter, William Bertram. The father of Hoot’s boy pal is killed by the leader of a gang of rustlers. What Hoot doesn’t know is that the killer is the foreman on his own father’s ranch! He sets out to bring the gang to justice in what is truly a marvelous early B-western (6.7 on IMDB). Not only do you get some terrific rodeo scenes, but you’ll also be treated to some wonderful shots of Lone Pine’s Alabama Hills, where most of the film’s action sequences were filmed. The shots of Hoot racing on horseback through the Alabama rocks is a thing to behold. Spurs was the first (and possibly only) sound B-western where the hero gets to mow down the bad guys with a machine gun! Released by Universal and directed by Gibson himself, Spurs is a true B-western classic. Transferred from a nice old 16mm original print.
