(1929, Paramount) Gary Cooper, Walter Huston, Mary Brian, Richard Arlen, Helen Ware, Chester Conklin, Eugene Pallette. Cooper is the big-hearted cowboy who falls for the new schoolteacher, sweetly played by Mary Brian. The local citizens are having a problem, though, with cattle rustling; and things are compounded when Coop finds out his best friend is connected to the rustlers. Huston, Arlen, and the rest of the cast shine in this early western epic. The first screen version of this classic Owen Wister novel goes all the way back to 1914 when Cecil B. DeMille produced it for Jesse Lasky and Paramount. And although it’s been remade numerous times over the years, many western film scholars feel that this, the 1929 version, is the best of the bunch. The amiable Cooper is perfectly cast in the title role and is a perfect contrast to the sometimes over-the-top villainry of Walter Huston. From 16mm.
