(1929, RKO) Rod La Rocque, Rita La Roy, Charles Byer, Ed Brady, Harry Semels. La Rocque is a greased-back-hair rogue of a pirate who has sailed his stolen yacht into a port where he encounters a pretty American singer in an oceanfront honky-tonk. The singer is already the subject of the affections of a jealous American, who soon finds himself in La Rocque’s clutches. There’s a catch, though, La Rocque will free him if the singer acquiesces to spending the night with the shifty pirate. What follows is the stuff that good melodramas are made of. Watch for the wonderful scene where La Rocque furnishes the authorities with an updated photo of himself for their wanted posters. A little stiff (it IS an early talkie after all) but still kind of fun. From 16mm
