(1964, Anamorphic Widescreen) Alan Steel, Wandisa Guida, Daniele Vargas, Livio Lorenzon, Andrea Aureli. A plot is underway in ancient Rome by the leader of the Praetorian Guard, who wishes for the Emperor’s daughter to marry his foppish son. When the emperor refuses, he ends up a corpse, stabbed by an assassin. The Praetorian leader then declares himself emperor. Enter Steel, as Hercules, who comes to the aid of the emperor’s exquisite daughter who—now stricken with amnesia—is hidden away in the countryside as the cruel tyrant’s soldiers search for her. There is a plethora of action in this wonderful peplum epic. Steel beats the crap out of more Roman soldiers than you can count. He also ends up in chains but—you guessed it—breaks free and comes to the rescue yet again. The big battle between the tyrant’s soldiers and soldiers loyal to the princess is lavishly mounted. This has to be one of Steel’s better films; it’s entertaining and action-packed from start to finish. Cool. Beautiful transfer and print; great color, from 35mm.
