(1968, Anamorphic Widescreen) Joaquín Cordero, Sonia Furió, Noé Murayama, Aurora Clavel, Luz María Aguilar, Carlos Agostí. This south-of-the-border gem is a remarkable blend of supernatural horror and espionage elements. It actually looks and plays more like an American-made film. It’s also the sequel to Dr. Satan (1965) and has Cordero reprising his role. Dr. Satan is summoned by his master, “Devil King” to destroy Lucifer’s servant, Yei Lin, and retrieve from him a formula for turning low-grade ores into gold. Dr. Satan has certain magical powers while Yei Lin is a vampire shape-shifter. They have numerous duel-to-the-death fight scenes, but they just can’t seem to finish each other off. Both Dr. Satan and Yei Lin are truly evil bad guys, but yet they’re both kind of cool; and frankly, you don’t know who to root for. Dr. Satan has two of the cutest, mod disco-zombie girls you’ll ever see, both bouncing around through the movie in mini-skirts. “Yes, Master!” There’s a great scene with a guy, a zombie-girl, and a knife—very cool. A great lab scene finishes off the picture in tremendous style—Kenneth Strickfaden would have loved it. We liked this movie a lot. Great music score and wonderful cinematography. Don’t try to make any sense of the script, just watch it for the fun of it. Way cool. In Spanish with English subtitles. Excellent color, from 35mm.
