(1967, Anamorphic Widescreen) Sheldon Pearson, Cindy Ellis, Penelope, Ann Grant, Holly Saunders. This disturbing psychological horror/exploitation thriller is about a modern-day writer who’s obsessed with the Marquis De Sade. Diagnosed with terminal cancer, he begins to live out De Sade's violent sexual fantasies. There are numerous gothic horror scenes set in the 1700s that are contrasted against modern-day sequences. One in particular, the girl-in-the-coffin strangulation scene, is quite disturbing. There is a TON of topless nudity in this film and some of the scenes of violence are quite unsettling. Not for all tastes, but a most unique film. The opening credits are hand-drawn on the various parts of a woman’s scantily-clad body. This film never received a rating from the MPAA, but it undoubtedly would have been rated at least “R,” perhaps even “X” for nudity, violence, and its highly adult themes. From 35mm.
