(1962, Anamorphic Widescreen) Mariam Fakhr Eddine, Salah Zulfikar, Mahmoud El Meligy, Abdel Moneim Ibrahim. We haven’t viewed that many Egyptian horror films, but this is absolutely the best one we’ve seen so far. A lawyer is summoned to an antiquated palace/mansion that’s known by locals to be not just haunted, but cursed as well. Even his coach driver will not go too near the place. Inside lives the wheelchair-bound owner, his beautiful daughter, his aging sister, and their furtive servants. The lawyer is asked to spend the night and make changes to the owner’s will. The lawyer and the daughter are clearly falling for each other (she’s beautiful); but before long the house is filled with horrific goings-on, which soon drive the daughter to the edge of her sanity. There are any number of truly terrifying sequences. The ghost-at-the-window scene is a wonderful moment. The lush orchestral music score might seem a little heavy-handed in places and the acting at times is a little melodramatic, but somehow it all works. This is a great little chiller. If you’re a fan of well-done old dark house horror movies you’ll definitely want to see this film. With English subtitles. From 35mm.
