(1943) Willy Castello, Lloyd Ingraham, Lona Andre, Betty Compson. This is one of those lovable “crime doesn’t pay” exploitation films, with convicted and about-to-be-executed criminal Castello (Lucky Lombardo) telling the sordid tales of his past and warning youthful viewers to steer clear of a life of crime. Conveniently, most of the flashback scenes are from earlier poverty row films in which Castello starred—a brilliant piece of promotional maneuvering by the film’s longtime poverty row producer, Willis Kent. Included are clips from such film giants as Smashing the Vice Trust, Wages of Sin, Cocaine Fiends, Mad Youth, Victims of Passion, and others. From 16mm
