(1929, Paramount) Wallace Beery, Warner Oland, Florence Vidor, Jack Oakie, Jack McHugh, Directed by William Wellman. After witnessing a Chinatown murder, Vidor, a pretty socialite, gets a sudden crush on a Chinatown gang leader, played by Beery. Berry is self-tortured about falling for an upper-crust women, and quickly their relationship becomes tumultuous. All the while, Beery is dealing with a Tong war with a rival gang, headed by Oland, who gives yet another grand performance as a sly Chinaman. There are plenty of plot twists, with numerous bodies dropping along the way. Beery gives a terrific performance. Chinatown Nights was shot as a silent film and later re-dubbed for sound. Even so, there were numerous sections of the film where the sound was slightly out of sync, which we have painstakingly fixed. Our video master comes from an outside source and is a little softer than our usual product, but still quite watchable. From 16mm.
