(1929) Warner Oland, Neil Hamilton, Jean Arthur, O. P. Heggie, William Austin. During the Boxer Rebellion in China during the early 20th century, in which a Chinese secret society attacked all westerners and anyone who associated with them, Dr. Fu Manchu's wife and child are killed by foreigners. Enraged, he vows to take his revenge on the British army officers he holds responsible for the killings. Oland gives a remarkably grand performance; one that’s often overlooked because of his fame as Charlie Chan. It’s truly one of his best films. BONUS FEATURE: DAUGHTER OF THE TONG (1939) Evelyn Brent, Grant Withers, Dave O’Brien, Richard Loo. Slick mystery about a snappy detective (Withers), who’s up against a female Oriental crime boss played expertly by Brent, “The Illustrious One.” Not bad for a poverty row Yellow Peril film. From a nice 16mm print.
