(1957, aka Frankie No Uchûjin) Frankie Sakai, Ichirô Sugai, Tomoko Kô, Ayuko Fujishiro, Tôru Abe. This incredibly rare Japanese sci-fi film is now available for the first time with English subtitles. Sakai plays numerous different parts in this grand science fiction comedy. A professor and his pretty assistant profess to have knowledge of a flying saucer that has visited the Earth. There’s some intrigue involved along the way, all wrapped around many funny moments. Eventually Sakai (who plays the hero, multiple aliens, and several others) and his pals (including the professor) are whisked away in a massive alien spacecraft. Inside they are given welcome gifts and shown the ways of alien life. There are all kinds of plot twists and frankly, this movie is really wacky—but in a good way. There are many laugh-out-loud moments and Sakai clearly shows his brilliance as a comedian. What a nice surprise this obscure film turned out to be. From 16mm.
