(1956) Sergey Stolyarov, Igor Vladimirov, Sergei Golovanov, Pyotr Sobolevsky, Vakhtang Ninua, Sergey Komarov. This grand Russian sci-fi color epic is about a futuristic submarine’s desperate undersea search for a lost Soviet vessel, which was destroyed and sunk under very mysterious circumstances (a French ship in the Pacific has suffered the same fate). These two sinkings are the doings of a mysterious criminal organization, which has planted a traitor on board the Russian sub. Along the way all kinds of trouble ensues, including sabotage and run-ins with monstrous undersea creatures. At times this film is filled with a lot of James Bond-type gadgetry; and the special effects, while primitive by today’s standards, are great fun. The bathyscope scene with a giant squid is very memorable. There are many cool scenes and even some rousing songs. Stolyarov, whom you may remember from films like Magic Voyage of Sinbad, Sword and the Dragon, and Nebula Andromeda does a great job as the sub’s commander. This is a long, two-part movie running well over two hours. In Russian with new English subtitles. Nice color, from 16mm.
