(1935) Jack Hulbert, Fay Wray, Ralph Richardson, Claude Hulbert, Gibb McLaughlin, Atholl Fleming. Master sleuth Bulldog Drummond pulls into a gas station where his car is sabotaged by crooks. Minutes later he crashes into Hulbert’s vehicle. In the hospital, the injured Drummond asks Hulbert to temporarily masquerade as him. His job is to help the desperate Fay Wray (who seldom looked more beautiful) find her jeweler grandfather who has been kidnapped by the same gang that sabotaged Drummond’s car. Hulbert, of course, takes the job far more seriously than intended. What follows is a titillating series of events (Hulbert is wonderful) that lead to the British Museum, climaxing with a white-knuckle chase on a runaway train in the London Underground. This is a first-rate comedy thriller with great dialogue, witty situations, and lots of thrills. Very cool. From 35mm.
