(1955) Eddie Constantine, Maria Frau, François Perrot, R.J. Chauffard, Roger Hanin, Luisa Rivelli, Nadine Tallier, Florence Landon. This elusive Lemmy Caution intrigue thriller is now available with English subtitles. Lemmy (Eddie) infiltrates a gang of crooks that has kidnapped a scientist who has plans for a revolutionary device that can manufacture diamonds. Maria Frau, who is about as beautiful, curvy, and buxom as they get, plays Eddie’s female foil; but she can’t seem to decide whose side she’s on. While Eddie’s falling all over her, there are any number of other French babes falling all over him—some with good intentions, some with bad intentions; but they all have one thing in common…they’re gorgeous! Eddie even gets to spank one of them. The big scene where the professor finally gets to demonstrate his invention is one of the more unusual lab scenes you’ll ever see. Eddie, as usual, is about the coolest guy on the planet, knocking his adversaries around like Ali vs. Foreman. There’s a very sweet relationship between Eddie and a little orphan girl, who always seems to be looking out for him but ultimately wants him to be her father figure. Like most of Eddie’s intrigue thrillers (the notable exception being Alphaville), The Diamond Machine has a tongue-in-cheek approach, which makes it part of a very unique set of films. Long before Sean Connery hit the screen as James Bond there was Eddie Constantine as Lemmy Caution. Good fun throughout. From 35mm.
