(1949) Regina Linnanheimo, William Markus, Åke Lindman, Annie Mörk, Rauha Rentola, Heikki Savolainen. This is a terrific Finnish action-drama film about two brothers: the eldest serious and dull, the youngest wild and full of life. Their family is ruled with an iron hand by their aging, petulant mother. Both men fall for the same girl. When the youngest is framed for murder, the eldest marries the girl, even though her heart belongs to the youngest. On top of that she is pregnant with the youngest’s baby! The eldest thinks the child is his, but the mother secretly knows the truth and hides it from both brothers. A series of highly dramatic events follows as the movie eventually rushes to a thunderous climax. The acting in this film is outstanding. The black and white cinematography is excellent. Some of the close-ups really pop (especially of Linnanheimo’s spectacularly beautiful face). This is an extremely engaging film about roaring rapids, lusty men and women, daring loggers, betrayal, crime, and death. A helluva film. There are a couple of scenes with full nudity—both male and female. Aka Hornankoski. From 35mm.
