Horror CLAWS OF IRON

(1951) Jôji Oka, Sumiko Hidaka, Chieko Seki, Tatsuo Saitô, Ryôsuke Kagawa, Shirô Kanemitsu, Toshiaki Konoe.  This is a really obscure Japanese horror movie—and most enjoyable, especially the second half of the film.  Claws of Iron (AKA Tetsu no Tsume) is a fine supernatural chiller about a WW2 vet whose blood is contaminated by the blood of a strange ape-like creature that attacks him in the jungle during the war.  Unfortunately for him, from then on whenever he drinks alcohol he turns into a hairy monster himself—kind of a cross between Mr. Hyde, an ape man, and a werewolf.  How cool is that!  Every time he gets wind of his ex-wife having a new husband or lover, he takes a few swigs of booze and…well…you can probably guess what happens.  Who is the mysterious man from his past who keeps guiding him to booze and his own self-destruction?  Claws of Iron, like The Wolf Man (1941) successfully portrays the tragic human side of its monster, along with heartbreak of the pretty young woman who loves him and tries to save him.  He eventually ends up being publicly exploited on stage at a burlesque theater with horrific results.  The ape man’s on-stage transformation scene is really cool.  He then runs amok throughout the theater and the nightclub next door, searching for his ex-wife (she’s a seductive dancer at the nightclub).  This sequence is a real wow, and the climactic rooftop chase that follows is memorable of what was to come years later in Curse of the Werewolf (1961).  Oka is wonderful as the self-tortured man-monster, as is Seki as the woman who loves him but seems unable to save him.  Hidaka is wonderfully sultry as the ex-wife, but Saitô nearly steals the show as the evil doctor who bends his hapless monster-victim to his own will.  A bit schlocky in spots but still great fun!  New English subtitles.  From 16mm.
