(1936 & 1932) Here are two 1930s horror oddities for the price of one, dressed up like a drive-in double feature, complete with an old time intermission clock. OUANGA (1936) Fredi Washington, Philip Brandon, Marie Paxton, Sheldon Leonard. This setting is zombie-infested Haiti. A black female plantation owner casts a voodoo curse on a white male neighbor who has recently chosen a woman of his own race over her. Zombies are soon revived to help in the sinister plot. SHAM POO THE MAGICIAN (1932) Hugh Herbert, Rosco Ates, Dorothy Granger, Jerry Mandy. In this offbeat RKO comedy-horror short, Herbert and Ates find themselves in an Arabian dive, fawning over a lovely cigarette girl. Performing goofy tricks is “Sham Poo” a hapless magician. Things get fun, though, when he resurrects a Frankensteinish monster in a casket called “Finkelstein.” There’s even a poor man’s Kenneth Strickfadden lab scene where the monster is brought back to life. Look for Bud Jamison in a small role as a bouncer. From 35mm.
