(1934) Víctor Urruchúa, Carlos Villatoro, Magda Haller, Beltrán de Heredia. The setting is an old Gothic monastery. Inside its dank walls a monk named Javier encounters another monk, with whom he was an acquaintance to long ago, Javier suddenly turns violent and tries to bludgeon him to death with a heavy crucifix. In seems there was a love triangle years before that resulted in the shooting death of the woman they were both in love with. The film then races to a terrifying conclusion, which features a long series of horrific hallucinations that are as scary as anything from 1930s’ horror films—some really great moments. Although not a full-fledged horror film, its climax is a terrifying thing to behold (it’s also classified on IMDB as a horror film) and it’s just a memorable film overall with many fine moments. 7.0 on IMDB. New English subs. From 35mm.
