THE FABULOUS WORLD OF JULES VERNE (1958) Lubor Tokos, Hugh Downs, Arnost Navrátil, Miroslav Holub, Frantisek Slégr. The evil Count Artigas kidnaps a scientist and his assistant. Artigas takes them to his lair inside a massive volcano out at sea. The professor’s experiments provide a way of controlling matter, which will result in the most lethal explosive ever created. However, the professor doesn’t know that Artigas plans to use the explosive to conquer the world. Only a small hot air balloon with a desperate message stand in the way the evil plans. This is the English language version of Vynález zkázy with the added Hugh Downs narration. An amazing film. 35mm.
WHAT A WHOPPER (1958, Anamorphic) Adam Faith, Sidney James, Carole Lesley. This is a cool adventure-comedy with a nice touch of sci-fi at the film’s climax. A struggling writer thinks he’s hit the jackpot when he decides to write a book about the Loch Ness Monster. He has a hard time finding a publisher, though, because it’s thought to be a hoax. Undaunted, the writer and his pals decide to assemble a phony monster, take photographs, and try to sell their scam to the locals in Scotland and, hopefully, their publisher. Little do they know what really waits for them in the murky waters of Loch Ness. From 35mm.
