Action-Adventure-Drama ROAD TO MANDALAY/THE MIRACLE MAN—Special Edition

(1926, 1919) Lon Chaney, Lois Moran, Owen Moore, Henry B. Walthal, directed by Tod Browning.  Not only have we crafted a great new music score for Road to Mandalay, but we’re also offering it in a newly tinted version, as well as the original B&W version.  Chaney is one-eyed Singapore Joe, a tough hoodlum whose beautiful, virtuous daughter is unaware that he’s her father.  When his own ship captain wants to marry her, all hell breaks loose.  Set in a steamy oriental locale.  Chaney’s makeup is unforgettable.  Our edition was made from a grainy 16mm print of the only surviving film elements, running 38 minutes in length.  But the storyline is complete and even through the film’s graininess it’s impossible not to appreciate Chaney’s brilliant performance.  Some of his facial close-ups are priceless.  Please note that we also had our original film-transfer video master enhanced recently and this is probably the best quality video around on this Chaney classic.  ALSO:  There are some longer versions of this film around on places like YouTube, etc., but these editions have been dreadfully slowed down and contain no additional original footage and in some cases have replaced all of the original intertitle cards with new ones that were never in the original film.  Silent, w/music score, from 16mm. PLUS: THE MIRACLE MAN (1919) Thomas Meighan, Lon Chaney, Betty Compson.  There are three surviving snippets of this film and we have reassembled them in a way that almost makes this edition play like one of those old Castle Films ultra-mini-versions.  Running at a hair over three minutes, our edition of The Miracle Man offers the basic story of a gang of swindlers who take advantage of an elderly faith healer’s supposed powers.  The big climactic scene is an amazing moment in film history.  Worth the price of admission for sure.  Silent, with narration and music score.  Also included is the original theatrical trailer for The Phantom of the Opera (1925).  From 16mm.
