(1928) Helene Costello, Cullen Landis, Wheeler Oakman, Mary Carr, Eugene Pallette. Here it is, filmdom’s first all-talking picture. The setting is a Broadway speakeasy. Landis is a gullible kid from upstate who’s taken in by a couple of crooks, thinking that they’re going to help him get a barbershop going in the Big Apple. Wrong! Oakman is wonderful as the sleazy, murdering bootlegger who has eyes on Landis’ dancehall gal pal Costello, who tries to steer the kid away from the criminal scene. Watch for a couple of cool early music numbers. A little creaky but good fun. From 16mm.
