(1962, Anamorphic Widescreen) Giuliano Gemma, Jacqueline Sassard, Pedro Armendáriz, Antonella Lualdi, Serge Nubret. This great sword & sandal film is filled with fantastic elements and supernatural creatures, including a cyclops and a gorgon. Gemma plays Crius, the youngest of the Greek titans, all of whom are imprisoned by the gods. Freedom for him and his brothers is promised in return for his slaying of the self-proclaimed god-emperor Cadmo (Armendáriz), who is in league with a devil. At stake is the life of Cadmo’s daughter, played by the drop-dead gorgeous Sassard. Although marketed as a comedy here in the States (as My Son the Hero) this action-packed thriller is more of a straight fantasy-adventure with numerous comedic moments tossed in for good measure. There is a ton of spirited, suspense-filled action, and even some scary moments. Armendáriz and Lualdi are terrific as the mad ruler and his luscious, evil queen, but the highlight of the film is the team of Gemma and Sassard, who are a wonderfully handsome hero-heroine couple. Gemma looks like a cross between Sean Flynn and Horst Buckholtz, while Sassard, with her soft, alluring beauty, has perhaps the most beautiful eyes in Peplum film history. Great fun from start to finish. Excellent color, 35mm.
