(1943) Pierre Fresnay, Josseline Gaël, Noël Roquevert, Guillaume de Sax, Antoine Balpetre. This is a wonderful French horror movie. The setting is a mountainside inn that’s been cut off by an avalanche. In spite of that, the mood is festive; the guests are in good spirits. Things are interrupted, though, by the arrival of a strange, one-handed man carrying small package. He seems to be afraid that someone may be following him. Suddenly the lights go out and the door to the inn blows open. “Something” seems to have entered. What follows is a tale of dealings with the devil the likes of which has seldom been put on film. A truly great movie! From 35mm.
