(1926) Paul Wegener, Alice Terry, Firmin Gémier, Iván Petrovich, Gladys Hamer, Henry Wilson. One of the best horror films of the silent era. Wegener, as Dr. Haddo, is marvelous as the crazed magician/alchemist who wants to create a new, artificial life by supernatural means. He puts the beautiful Alice Terry under his hypnotic spell, forcing her into marriage. His ultimate goal? To use her blood in his mad experiments. His twisted dwarf assistant helps him in his mad schemes. In the film’s wonderful climax, which takes place high atop Dr. Haddo’s laboratory during a torrential rain storm, you’ll be treated to some of the most awesome gothic sets ever seen in a horror film. The use of light and shadow on Wegener’s weird face is masterful. The climactic lab scene is a doozy. Just an unforgettable film. Silent with a beautiful piano score (not Laurent Pigeolet). From a beautiful tinted film print.
