(1972) Patrick O'Neal, James Patterson, Mary Woronov, Astrid Heeren, John Carradine. On Christmas Eve Lawyer John Carter (O'Neal), with mistress in tow, arrives to a small Massacussets town where he is charged with selling a home inherited by Jeffrey Butler (Patterson). When the lawyer and mistress go missing that very night, Patterson sets out to investigate the towns seedy history and uncover the true history of his inheritance, which leads him from one horror to the next. One of the strengths of this movie is the growing sense of dread that starts out subdued and builds right up to the film's climax. Watch out for axe murders and dismemberments in this grim yet stylish old dark house chiller. O'Neal is excellent (while he's around) and it's always nice to see horror veteran Carradine hanging about for good measure. Beautiful color. Rated R. From 35mm
