(1927) Al Jolson, May McAvoy, Warner Oland, Eugenie Besserer, Otto Lederer, Moisha Yudelson. Although largely a silent film, this cinema classic went down in history as the first talking feature film, with numerous scenes shot in sound, primarily those with Jolson singing (the silent sections were accompanied by a Vitaphone music score). Al plays a young Jewish kid, raised by a strict Jewish father (he's a Cantor in the local synogogue) who passionately wants Al to also—like his descendents before him—become a Cantor. But Al has his sights on Jazz music and a singing career on Broadway. Many great scenes are scattered throughout this classic that pit family religious traditions against the modern, secular ambitions of a wayward son. Jolson singing "Blue Skies" is an unforgettable moment in film history. Engrossing from start to finish. Beautiful print. From 35mm.
