(1939) Aleksandr Shchagin, Sergey Martinson, Olga Shaganova-Obraztsova, Georgiy Uvarov, Mikhail Dagmarov. This marvelous Russian fantasy is similar to Pinocchio. It’s a combination of live action and animation and it’s filled with fantastic characters and magical moments. The climax is quite memorable, featuring a magnificent airborne sailing ship. Cool. Some of this is reminiscent of George Pal’s stop-motion animation shorts of the ‘30s and ‘40s. A wonderful music score compliments the proceedings. 6.6 on IMDB. English Subtitles. 35mm.
