THE BACCHANTES (1961, Anamorphic) Taina Elg, Pierre Brice, Alberto Lupo, Akim Tamiroff, Alessandra Panaro. To ward off a drought, the king of Thebes plans the sacrifice a young virgin. But the god Dionysus intervenes, bringing Thebes a torrent of rain, sparing the girl’s life seconds before death. Watch as the executioner is struck by lightning just as he raises his sword! It then becomes a war of wits between Dionysus and the King. The climax takes place in a huge, mystical cave where the women of Thebes use magic powers against the King’s hoplites, who have come to slay them. Many moments of magic and mysticism with scenes of beautiful Theban women engaged in quasi-erotic dances. Excellent color, 35mm.
SAMSON (1961, Anamorphic) Brad Harris, Walter Reeves, Mara Berni, Brigitte Corey, Alan Steel. Samson attempts to restore a queen to her rightful throne. Lots of typical exciting peplum action. Harris is great in the title role with Steel also thrown in for good measure (with dark hair instead of blonde). Only drawback is some occasional weak comedy relief, but overall this is a finely mounted spectacle film and a must for all fans of muscleman epics. From a beautiful 35mm print.
