(1950) BLutz Moik, Hanna Rucker, Paul Bildt, Eva Probst, Paul Esser. This is a marvelous fantasy with horror elements. Moik (a Horst Buchholz lookalike) is a frustrated Black Forest laborer whose impoverished situation deters him from marriage. He receives two wishes from the good spirit of the forest, which will pave his way to happiness. But when one of his wishes backfires, it costs him all his riches. There is only one thing left to do…he must trade his real heart for a heart of stone from the evil spirit who also inhabits the forest and who offers him vast riches in return. Along with being a first rate fantasy-horror film, this is a wonderful morality play, emphasizing the need for goodness and compassion. A truly wonderful film. Watch for the great scene in which the evil spirit throws his spear, which then turns into a monstrous snake in mid-air! Subtitled in English. Nice color, from 16mm.
