BATTLE OF THE WORLDS (1961, ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN, English Subs) Claude Rains, Bill Carter, Maya Brent, Umberto Orsini, Jacqueline Derval. This is a really cool outer space movie with lots of battle scenes and alien spaceships battling against the desperate forces of Earth. The plot is simple but fun: Earth may be destroyed by a runaway planet controlled by a giant computer. Raines and his team fly off into space to stop the giant mass of hurtling destruction. Will they succeed, or is Earth doomed? A lot interesting scientific mumbo jumbo adds to the flavor of this action-packed sci-fi classic. Great cinematography with lots of cool special effects. The flying saucers, shooting off their death rays, area particular delight. One of Rains last roles. Great color, from an anamorphic 35mm print.
CREATURE FROM THE HAUNTED SEA (1961 ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN) Anthony Carbone, Betsy Jones Moreland, Robert Towne, Beach Dickerson, Esther Sandoval. Now in widescreen from a great 35mm print. A fake sea monster, blamed for many deaths, turns out to be real! The monster is kind of goofy-looking, but still more than able to rip you to shreds—which it does to more than one victim! There’s a bit of espionage in the overall storyline, which adds to the fun of it all. Moreland and Humphrey Bogart imitator Carbone are perfect in their roles as a couple of American connivers. Carbone's cowardly reaction to the monster pulling the woman he loves overboard is priceless! If you like other Corman gems like Little Shop of Horrors or A Bucket of Blood, you'll love this great black comedy. Anamorphic widescreen, from 35mm.
