(1937) Will Hay, Moore Marriott, Graham Moffatt, Sebastian Smith, Agnes Lauchlan, Percy Walch, Dennis Wyndham. This is one of Hay’s best comedies, featuring a plethora of laughs, all interwoven with criminal conspiracy thrills and some occasional elements of horror. Hay is the new stationmaster at a lonely railway station out in the English countryside (complete with laundry hanging across the tracks). The locals believe the nearby train tunnel is the frequent haunt of a mysterious ghost known as “One-Eyed Joe,” who supposedly resides up the hill in a haunted windmill. When a whole train disappears, One-Eyed Joe is suspected, but Hay suspects it’s something far more sinister—and human! The film’s long climax, which begins at the “haunted” windmill and runs up and through the incredible runaway train sequence, is great fun—thrills, chills, and broad laughs all thrown into one big mixing bowl. A loose re-working of The Ghost Train. Very cool. From 16mm.
