(1934, aka DIE WELT OHNE MASKE) Harry Piel, Kurt Vespermann, Anni Markart, Rudolf Klein-Rogge, Philipp Manning, Olga Tschechowa. Verspermann is an eccentric inventor who invents a radio-television device that, unfortunately, doesn’t work! Piel is the suave con-man who convinces him to carry on, in spite of his failures. There are tons of lab scenes filled with fantastic electrical devices. When a freak accident happens, Piel reconnects the device in a way that miraculously not only cures the device’s technical glitches, but somehow endows it with the ability to see through any object and project the image onto its television screen. Naturally, he and the professor become targets of various unscrupulous manufacturers, all of whom plot to steal the machine so they can win a national competition for the best TV device. Watch for the scene when Piel single-handedly beats the crap out of eight thugs who are trying to steal the device. Pespermann and Tschechowa have delightful on-screen chemistry together. Don’t take the plausibility of the film’s science to seriously and you’ll have a great time with this robust science fiction obscurity. The climatic race to get the TV device to the electronics conference on time is a delight. Most enjoyable. From 16mm. In German with English Subtitles.
