(1952) Tod Slaughter, Patrick Barr, Tucker McGuire, Ingeborg von Kusserow. Tod is up to his nefarious plans once again as he plans an elaborate scheme for blackmail. Barr plays the detective who’s out to bring him to justice. There’s murder and mayhem aplenty in this curious film, which was edited together from three episodes of a Brit detective series. Tod has some priceless bits of dialogue, complimented here and there with his maniacal laughter. It’s kind of jarring, to see him surrounded by women in modern 1950s dress, but it doesn’t stop him from leering at them in his best old-time melodrama manner. Watch him gleefully prepare a bathtub of nitric acid for one of his intended victims! The film’s original editing is a little disjointed in spots but there are lots of fun moments. Tod was getting up there in age when this film was made but he still has his old vitality. Cool. 35mm.
