(1976) Pauline Quirke, Geoffrey Bateman, Wensley Pithey, Ruth Goring, Shirley Cheriton, Herbert Norville. Quirke is brilliant in her portrayal of a pitiful, frumpy, inhibited teenage checkout girl at a small supermarket. She has a crush on her manager who despises her and lusts for another female employee. Then strange things begin happening. It begins with a can rolling across the market floor, seemingly under its own power. It seems at first that a poltergeist may be at work, but when things begin flying off shelves and packaged foods start exploding it becomes clear that a far more malevolent power is at work. This is a wonderful, off-beat made-for-TV Brit feature, unlike any supernatural thriller you have ever seen. Quirke is fantastic and Bateman is perfect as her contemptable manager. Script by Nigel Kneale. Nice color.
