THE REBEL’S SON (1938) Harry Baur, Anthony Bushell, Roger Livesey, Patricia Roc, Joan Gardner. In the 16th century the Cossacks revolt against the Polish government to free their Ukrainian homeland. They are led by Taras Bulba, played brilliantly by Baur. Just as good is Bushell in the role of his educated but wayward son. He falls head over heels for the daughter of the Polish governor, played by the stunning Roc, who was truly as beautiful as any British actress of the 1930s. This is a big, sprawling film with lots of action and a rollicking, grandiose view of Cossack life. The final battle scenes are terrific and the climactic confrontation between Baur and Bushell is very memorable. You may remember Bushell as the hero in Karloff’s The Ghoul. From 16mm.
