THE TUNNEL (1933) Jean Gabin, Madeleine Renaud, Robert Le Vigan, Andre Nox. There’s a big meeting between the world’s fifteen richest industrialists. A project is launched to build a tunnel from Long Island to Europe. As the tunnel progresses, its workers are faced with many perils, including floods, fires, worker unrest, and sabotage. The climactic sabotage sequence is extremely well-done and features a shocking death that no viewer will expect. This is a loud, rousing movie that often deals with the social implications of such a fantastic project. The confrontation scene between the head of the project and the saboteur is very memorable. Gabin is terrific as the American engineer who heads the project and is torn at times between his vision of the future and the fantastic dangers his workers face. Renaud is charming as his neglected yet faithful wife. Not to be missed! English subs, 35mm.
