THE BURNING COURT (1962) Nadja Tiller, Jean-Claude Brialy, Edith Scob, Perrette Pradier, Walter Giller. This Euro-chiller has a most interesting combination of “old dark house" and “witch’s curse” themes. Scob plays the lovely descendant of an ancient witch who was wronged by her lover, and whose descendants she cursed (but of course!). Scob and her husband arrive at a mysterious chateau, which just happens to be owned by the “cursed” relatives of the ancient witch’s lover. Soon strange things begin to happen, including (of course) murder! A very creepy film that deals with a number of weird subjects, including occultism, possession, family curses, etc.; there's even a disappearing, reappearing body. 16mm.
THE NIGHT THEY KILLED RASPUTIN (1962) John Drew Barrymore, Edmund Purdom, Gianna Canale, Jany Clair, Ugo Sasso. An atmospheric retelling of the rise and fall of Rasputin, whose seemingly supernatural powers made the czarina his hypnotic slave. Purdom really shines in the title role. Young Barrymore reprises the same basic role his father played in Rasputin and the Empress. This is an interesting European-made historical thriller with mild horror elements. From 16mm.
